ode to great men who dont tell us how great they are…

Several writers in American press call “Usain Bolt the greatest Olympian and athlete ever” … and one of the articles I read had a special focus on how “Michael Phelps is not the greatest.”

For the record, I do not care either way — who is the greatest or not, has zero impact on my life.
Whether its Phelps, Bolt, Rocky, or Drago … I don’t care – this is not the point I am discussing in this blog entry.

But think about this for just a second…

Phelps has competed in 4 Olympics and won 22 Olympic medals, and throughout his career seemed to turn the focus from himself onto his teammates; often giving the spot light to his coach and other swimmers.

I cannot find an article or interview where Phelps comes across boastful or selfish.

Many historians are claiming his record of 22 medals (18 of them Gold) most probably will not be broken in our lifetime.

He has proven to be the ultimate champion, and its worth noting that Michael Phelps doesn’t pose after each victory, nor does he go around telling people how he is the greatest of all time.

Doing a little research for this blog post, I read that Usain Bolt recently changed his Twitter bio from “the greatest athlete of all time” to “the most naturally gifted athlete the world has ever seen.”

Usain Bolt is the King of boasting and bragging and owning the spot light – it is safe to suggest in a word Bolt is “selfish.”

I am sure Usain Bolt is a great guy,  and his  “me, me, me, me”  style of self-promotion is just linked to one of the basic principle in economics:  “supply what is demanded…”

After all, this is how he makes his living and the world seems to crave his self-promotion …

I am not Bolt bashing – he is the product of the world we live in today.

But when did it change?

When did the world, led by America start craving all of this “self-absorbed” – “self-promotional” bull shit?

Its all around us…

Last night, I was looking for information so used youtube… and I came across an American woman’s video blog where all she did was talk about herself … there was (absolutely) zero added value to any discussion on any subject.

I was intrigued by the complete lack of deep discussion in this woman’s vblog so I checked out her other videos ….. and all of them were the same,  just a dumpy, talkative young woman telling the audience about her banal day to day life …

This self absorbed woman has 10,000+ followers.

Why!!!?

When did the focus on what is important, change from the quality of ones character to the number of twitter followers or facebook friends one has?
